When I was studying Photography, I had a special occasion to observe closely some antique pieces of the photogravure. They had such a huge impact on me that I stared immediately to search a laboratory of that technique. Photogravure was practiced at the dawn of the Photography as a true artistic language. At first, people couldn’t regard it as a form of art in spite of his infinite artistic possibilities. One of the most important figures who changed this situation was absolutely Alfred Stieglitz, not to mention his legendary 291 gallery and Camera Work Magazine. His career influenced our way to see photography so deeply.
This 111 (art gallery), in a certain sense, has the same spirit. Nowadays we forgot quite completely the real beauty of a photograph or a painting made by heart with hand. When you experience the process of painting or that of development of photogravure/camera obscure, you can easily realize that every image you create is a miracle. Though I don’t want to exclude the digital world, for example unbelievable Giclée print technology, sometimes it becomes crucial for the realization of an art work. Our object is to preserve all of those manual/digital techniques and develop them for our future because, after all, that of art is not to reproduce reality but to create a reality of the same intensity, like someone said in the past.
